How you find our beach?

Sunday, 3 June

We were supposed to go to church and the beach this morning, but Moses did not arrive to pick us up until the early afternoon. When he finally came, he took us to his friend Joushua's house which is at the army barracks we went to on friday. Joshua's mother is the matron, or head nurse, at the military hospital and, with a rank of colonel, lives in comparatively luxurious house. If everything works out, she will be hosting us for the rest of the summer, as the hostel is rather expensive - it costs 51,000 Le or $17 a night - which is just about as cheap as one can find in Freetown. Then we went with Joshua and Moses to Lumley beach, which is a only a few minutes from the army barracks. We were supposed to meet Andrew, his girlfriend and Frederic there, but, as everyone here operates at a much slower pace, he didn't show up for several hours. While waiting, we played football (well I tried to play - they're so much better) and hung out at a fairly new restaurant on the beach, watching the passersby. Everyone asked what we thought of the beach (in broken english as "How you find our beach") to which we always said "very fine."

Most of Freetown went at at the Togo-Sierra Leone football match at the National Stadium, but we didn't feel like challenging the crowds for tickets, so we returned to the barracks and had some bean and fish sauce on rice that Moses' aunt had prepared and then visited with Moses' girlfriend, Taza, who lives about a half mile away. We also met Moses' uncle, who is an officer in the army. He promised us that Moses was very trustworthy and that we would have to visit him at his headquarters sometime soon.

We meandered up the hill to Joshua's house where his sister had made fried plantains. (think bananas - so tasty!) Joshua and Moses told us about the war and it's impacts and the various interventions - I'll have to post more about it later. We went back to the national stadium around 9 pm and fell asleep, but only after journaling for at least an hour.
